How Hackmann Lawn & Landscape Stays Ahead of the AI Empowered Homeowner

Market Boss interviews Hackmann Lawn & Landscape on AI Search Results | STL

It’s 9:45pm on a Tuesday night in St. Peters, MO. It rained hard all afternoon and a homeowner is standing at the back door looking at a yard that has turned into a shallow pond. Again. She doesn’t call anyone. She picks up her phone and asks, “Why does my backyard flood everytime it rains?” After receiving an answer, she starts typing again, and before she can finish, a prompt appears for “lawn drainage and landscapers near me.”

A few years ago, that question would have produced ten blue links and a long evening of clicking. Today, an AI assistant reads the web for her, every blog, every image, every video, every social media platform and every website. It weighs what it finds and hands back an answer. She doesn’t need to click on any links. She doesn’t get redirected to another site to discover how to fix her flooded backyard. The AI assistant explains grading and soil compaction to her, mentions that French drains are a common fix for Missouri clay and names a local company that clearly knows what it is talking about.

The businesses that get named in that moment aren’t there by luck. They’ve done the unglamorous work of giving search engines and AI tools rich, accurate and local information they can trust. St. Charles based Hackmann Lawn & Landscape is one of them and it is a big reason we love working with them.

To find out how a local landscaping company keeps up with the AI era of search, we sat down with John, manager at Hackmann Lawn & Landscape.

Homeowners are researching more than ever before they ever pick up the phone. How are you thinking about that customer?

(John): The customer today is smarter and more prepared than ever. We find that by the time someone calls us, they’ve usually already asked Google Gemini or ChatGPT three or four questions. They know what aeration is. They know they probably need overseeding and the right time of year to do it to avoid weeds from taking root. What they want to know is whether we actually understand their yard, in their neighborhood, with their soil and how much it costs.

Our goal is to be useful long before they are ready to buy. It’s easy to show before and after photos and videos for inspiration on patios, firepits and outdoor lighting. But when it comes to landscape maintenance like mulch, mowing, trimming bushes, they want to work with the landscapers who truly get when and how to do the job right. If we are the ones who answered their question about spring fertilizing back in March, we are the name they remember when they want a new patio in September.

Your website has seasonal guides, FAQ sections and pages built around specific towns. Why go that deep?

(John): Because that’s how people actually ask questions. Nobody searches “landscaping services” anymore. They ask, “When should I aerate my lawn in St. Charles?” or “Is it to late to plant grass in October in Missouri?” We built out Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter Care pages, each with its own set of frequently asked questions because every season brings a different set of worries.

We also have pages for drainage in St. Peters, leaf removal in O’Fallon, sod installation in Ladue. Those aren’t just keyword pages. They reflect real work in real places. When an AI tool is trying to figure out who actually serves a specific area and does a specific job, that detail matters.

What does “information rich” mean for a landscaping company like yours?

(John): It means we answer the question behind the question. One of our most popular articles explains why putting salt down on Missouri driveways and roads below 11 degrees doesn’t really work and how that salt can hurt your plants once things warm up. That’s not a sales pitch. It is genuinely helpful and it’s very specific to where our customers live.

Same thing with native plants. We wrote about how native Missouri plants help with CO2 and naturally keep pests down. We put a Top 20 Landscaping Trends for 2026 guide with a video to go with it. Every one of those pieces tells search engines and AI tools, “This company knows Missouri yards.” Honestly, it helps our crew and our customers speak the same language.

Video has become a big part of how you show up. How are you using it?

(John): Video lets people see the result before they commit. We recently put out a hydroseeding transformation video that shows a yard going from bare dirt to green lush grass and it does more to explain the service than any paragraph could. We’ve also been producing short videos on aeration, overseeding, landscape lighting and full grass transformations.

We are using AI to help produce some of that content which lets us create more of it faster, without losing the look and feel of our brand. Pair that with our YouTube channel and social media posts and people get to know us before they’ve ever met us.

AI tools sometimes surface old or wrong information about a business. How do you protect your brand’s reputation online?

(John): That was a real concern for us. If an AI assistant pulls an old service list or outdated hours, that becomes a bad first impression we never even got to see. Missouri Market Boss helped us get ahead of that with what they call Reputation Management, which is really about making sure the story about us across the web is consistent and current.

Reviews are a huge part of that. We ask happy customers to leave a Google review and we’ve been recognized with Nextdoor Awards in 2022, 2023, 2025 and Houzz Best of Service in 2020 and 2021. Those third party signals carry weight both with people and AI tools recommending businesses to them.

What advice would you give other local service businesses trying to keep up?

(John): First, get your information right and keep it right across all channels online. Your services, your service area, your photos, your reviews. If you are sloppy there, nothing else works.

Second, look at your website and ask yourself, “If a robot was reading this for a homeowner, would it understand exactly what we do and where we do it?” If the answer is no, fix that.

Third, don’t wait until AI is obviously paying off to start. The companies that are putting in the work now are the ones that will be hard to catch in a couple of years. You can already see the gap forming.

Is your business showing up when customers ask AI?

(Market Boss): Hackmann Lawn’s approach isn’t magic. It’s a steady commitment to answering real questions in real detail for real neighborhoods. At Missouri Market Boss, that is the heart of our MB360 Intent Framework: treating every search as a full circle of intent, not a single keyword, so your business shows up whether a homeowner types into Google, asks Claude or Chat GPT, or talks to the AI assistant on their phone.

If you are a contractor or home service business in St. Charles County or the Greater St. Louis Region and you want to know how AI sees your business today, let’s talk. We will show you where you stand and what it takes to become the answer.
